TEXTBOOKS OF AYURVEDA
TEXTBOOKS OF AYURVEDA
Ayurveda, like other
eastern knowledge, has its origins in the Vedas (ocean of knowledge). Even
while all four vedas contain Ayurvedic material, the Atharvaveda contains far
more Ayurvedic information than the other vedas. As a result, Acharya Charaka
has stated unequivocally that we Ayurveda physicians should hold Atharvaveda in
high regard.
Apart from the
Atharvaveda, Ayurveda draws its inspiration from three primary classical books,
one of which is known as Brihat-Trayi and the other three as Laghu-Trayi. Among
Brihat-Trayi Charaka Samhita is considered the standard text of Kayachikitsa
(internal medicine), Sushruta Samhita is the classic of Shalya-Shalakya
(surgery and E.N. T.), and Ashtanga Hridaya appears to be a blend of the two
with certain additions.
The exquisite
compendium of etiopathogenesis and indications symptoms of all diseases
recorded in classics is Laghu-Trayi Madhava Nidana. The second is the
Sharangdhar Samhita, which is an excellent work of Ayurveda that has been
beautifully presented in a concise and lucid format with many newer additions
and alterations. The third is Bhavaprakasha, which elaborates on the Ayurvedic
plarmacopea in addition to all other Ayurvedic literature.
Apart from the
aforementioned masterpieces, there is also the Kashyap Samhita, which is a comprehensive
and famous book on Bal-Roga (Paediatrics) as well as other Ayurvedic resources.
Aside from the
aforementioned classics and other books relevant to Ayurveda, other classics
and works from a later time are also used as Ayurveda source material. However,
some of these works have been destroyed or discovered to be incomplete. As a
result, these works are not thought to be worth reading or practicing.
